From The Vine

4x6"
Oil on canvas board

One nice beautiful tomato fresh from the vine.  I love blending the values on the canvas when everything comes together in rapid fashion.

Empty Shell

I missed a few of days in my painting routine.  One too many deadlines had crossed over that I had to meet.  Anyway, getting back into the groove of things, painting this oyster shell was interesting given the nuances between the cool and warm values playing within its textures.  Also the stark transition between smooth porcelain like surfaces against the rough and coarse surfaces made for a fun session.

A Slice of Mandarin

5x7"
Oil on canvas board

The last of the dried up pieces.  I had to rub some olive oil on this slice just to get some of the luster back.  I think it worked.  Looks kind of juicy, yeah?

This piece could have easily turned into a two day painting.  A lot of things going on within this still life setting.  I tried to stay loose but found myself at times noodling within the details.

Wedges

5x7"
Oil on canvas board

For this painting I started with a cadmium orange and burnt umber ground mix.  I think this helps to bring out the illuminating qualities of the overall piece.

Unraveling

5x7"
Oil on canvas board

I started this painting with a  Payne's gray prepped surface.  A much cooler approach that created a challenge when capturing any kind of translucency in the Mandarin orange.  Experimentation is always good.

Now it's a little more shriveled and starting to fold inward.  I decided to crop in more for a closer look.
